Material Matters: Why the Wood We Use Tells a Story

Most people think of materials in terms of cost or finish.

We don’t.

At Gilk, we see material as memory. As language. As something living. We don’t just select materials—we listen for them.

My story with wood began long before I ever considered building homes. When I was a kid, my neighbor was a woodworker. One day, a friend of his brought over a sawmill to help cut and mill some cedar trees from our property. I didn’t realize it then, but that moment planted a seed. There was something sacred in it. Something quiet, powerful, and deeply human.

Years later, when I bought a cabin in Ohio as a young NFL player, I was surrounded by woods—and I felt that seed grow. I was drawn to the trees. Not just for their beauty, but for their story. Trees are witnesses. They grow slowly, layer by layer, through seasons of hardship and rest. They carry history in their rings. I began to see the land not as something to use, but as something to tend to. Like a gardener. With care. With respect.

When trees fell on the property, I didn’t just cut them for firewood. I knew they could become something more. I tracked down that same sawmill—Pete Bickmore’s—and brought it to Ohio. I started milling red oak. Slowly. Quietly. Carefully. When a tree fell, I milled it and stored the slabs in my barn. And then I waited.

Years passed.

When I built my home in Tampa, I hauled that same red oak down from Ohio. I re-milled it and used it for the beams in the ceiling, the stair treads, and the dining table in the heart of the home. That wood carries story. It holds my past. It connects Ohio and Tampa. It connects me to who I’ve been and who I’m becoming.

That’s what we try to bring to every Gilk project. We may not always use literal wood from a client’s childhood backyard, but we’re always listening for it—the symbolic wood, the raw material of their life. The parts of their story that shaped them. The seasons that matured them. The pain that refined them. The dreams that grounded them.

Because when a home reflects that, it becomes more than shelter. It becomes a mirror. A place of peace. A place of remembrance.

We don’t build surface-level spaces. We build from the inside out.
From story to structure. From roots to roofline.

Because materials matter.
And so do the people they carry.

At Gilk, we’re dedicated to creating custom homes that reflect your vision and values. If you’re ready to take the next step toward building a home that’s truly yours, contact us today — we’d love to help you bring your ideas to life.
