Designing a custom home: it’s all about your story

Everyone generally starts with what they want.

Wants are great. Needs are better.

But before either of those, there is a question most people never think to ask: what’s your story?

When we sit down with a client at Gilk, we are not asking how many bedrooms they want or what style they have pinned to a board. We start with a conversation about their life. What is working in their current space, and what isn’t. What season are they in? How do they see their future?

We ask about the relationship between partners. The interests of their kids. How their lives have come together, culturally, emotionally, practically.

We ask lifestyle questions so we can discover what the square footage actually needs.

Because if the structure doesn’t reflect your story, what is the point of building?

The problem: “custom” isn’t actually custom

Let’s be honest. Most “custom” homes are not custom at all. They follow trends. Templates. A pre-loaded framework that looks fresh but feels familiar. Clients pick from a few options and call it personalization. That is not design; it is mass production with a fresh coat of paint. And frankly, it is an insult to the community of designers, builders and artisans who care about this work.

We are living in a cultural moment obsessed with speed and image, especially in places like Tampa, where real estate is booming and expectations are sky high. Everyone wants a finished product fast, but few want to engage in the journey of becoming. They are buying the image of a future they desire instead of doing the work to co-create a home that is built to last through all their seasons.

Buying something that looks like the life you want is not the same as building the life you want.

What we are really inviting clients into is a deepening. A reflection. Who are you, really? What matters to you? Why do you do what you do? Let’s bring that into your home.

Designing from the inside out

At Gilk, we believe homes should reflect the rituals people actually live in, not a fantasy of what they think they want. We are not interested in designing shrines. We are designing living spaces:
